A Meal Without Wine

To quote blogger Clare Wadsworth: "That saying is attributed to everyone, from French chemist Louis Pasteur to gastronome Brillat–Savarin to Californian winemaker Robert Mondavi."

Here is an attribution to Pasteur; here's one to Brillat-Savarin; and here's one to Mondavi.

I couldn't find it in any of the sources I usually rely on to verify quotations (the Oxford dictionaries, Wikiquote, etc.)

My guess is that this is a proverb, which has probably been around for centuries.
